Is College Worth It? Luckbox Looked at the Data
Luckbox magazine has been nominated once again for a Folio Award, one of the publishing industry’s greatest honors. This time, the August 2022 issue—which had the theme Is College Worth It?—is in the running for Best Magazine Editorial Use of Data.
That edition demonstrated the truth of a statement apocryphally attributed to Mark Twain, who once supposedly decried the existence of “lies, damn lies and statistics.” In that vein, Luckbox focused on a quantitative assessment of the "value" of a college education from a return-on-investment perspective. The issue included data-heavy stories with well-documented conclusions noting that 30% of colleges have more than half of their students earning less than high school graduates after 10 years.
Luckbox parsed data from a study evaluating the lifetime ROI of 30,000 majors (programs) across 1700 universities. The conclusions were sobering, "If ROI is adjusted to reflect the underlying costs of education, not just tuition charges, the [percent] of non-performing programs is 37%".
The issue also included information on how readers could identify the specific ROI of each of the 30,000 majors evaluated.

Even with that intriguing, paradoxical theme, Luckbox faces stiff competition for the prestigious Folio Award. Thousands of entries were submitted in more than 30 categories. But don’t count the magazine out. Since its 2019 debut, Luckbox has earned 23 editorial awards. What’s more, it wouldn’t be the magazine’s first Folio Award: It’s won in the past for Best New Custom Content Magazine and Best Instructional Single Issue.
Can it happen again? Well, Folio magazine bills its Eddie Awards and Ozzie Awards as recognition of uncompromising journalism and bold design in all sectors of the publishing industry. You can decide for yourself if Luckbox matches that description because digital editions of the magazine are available through a special free subscription offer at getluckbox.com.
