The Best Broker for Traders and Active Investors?

By:James Melton

One broker continues to win awards and keeps appearing at the top of rankings

2023 was a rewarding year for tastytrade as the brokerage’s ever-improving, user-friendly technology and unique workplace culture earned it numerous accolades from the business press and others. And now the acclaim is continuing in the opening days of this year.

“It is great to see our innovative platform and technology being recognized by these outlets,” says JJ Kinahan, CEO of IG North America, which includes tastylive, tastytrade and IG's FX Business. “Over the past year, we’ve worked very hard to continually improve our platforms to offer the best experience to our customers.”

Bankrate: Best in eight categories

This month, Bankrate tapped tastytrade for a roundup of best brokers for stock trading, best brokers for fractional share investing and best online trading platforms.

“tastytrade is a brokerage built primarily for active traders looking to keep costs low, though it comes with a few notable omissions from a fully featured online broker,” Bankrate says. “tastytrade excels on costs, particularly for options and cryptocurrency, where it caps your commissions on individual trades regardless of size.”

Bankrate also named tastytrade to its “best of” lists in the following categories:

Benzinga: Best for options

In November, tastytrade won the Best Brokerage for Options Trading title in the Benzinga Global Fintech Awards. Benzinga also named tastytrade as a finalist for the Best Trading Technology award.

Business Insider: Best for low-cost futures

In December, the tastytrade app was included in Business Insider’s list of Best Commodity Trading Apps. Specifically, it was named the best app for low-cost futures.

Chicago Tribune: Top workplace

The Chicago Tribune named IG North America, including tastytrade, tastylive, tastycrypto and IG U.S. , among Chicago’s Top Workplaces for 2023.

Forbes Advisor: Best for options trading

Forbes Advisor chose tastytrade as the best online broker for options trading in its Best Online Brokers January 2024 list.

Forbes Advisor says: “tastytrade offers competitive pricing and fees, including commissions on equity option trades that are capped at $10 per leg. It also offers commission-free trading in stocks and ETFs and one of the lowest commission rates for futures in our survey.”

Fortune Recommends: 10 best

Fortune Recommends named tastytrade one of its 10 best online brokerages for 2023.

“We think this pick is good for traders looking to cut costs. Tastytrade is highly regarded for its $0 account minimum and low commissions,” Fortune Recommends says.

Investopedia: Best for options

In February 2023, tastytrade was picked as the Best Broker for Options by Investopedia in the online publication’s Best Online Brokers and Trading Platforms compilation. And in January, tastytrade earned the designation again when Investopedia updated its listing.

“tastytrade maintains the top spot as the best broker for options trading because of the way it optimizes tools and content to suit the needs of its options-focused client base. Moreover, tastytrade has set up its options pricing with caps that make it the lowest-cost brokerage for high-volume, high-frequency options traders,” Investopedia says.

Kiplinger: Best options platform

In July, tastytrade was listed among Kiplinger’s Best Options Trading Platforms. Kiplinger praised tastytrade’s robust informational tools.

“tastytrade offers robust option analytics and tools for traders, allowing for relatively pain-free position creation and trade management,” Kiplinger says.

USA Today: Best for futures

This month, tastytrade was named to a list of Best Brokers for Futures in January by USA Today.

“Tastytrade is highly competitive in terms of fees,” USA Today says. “While standard futures contracts charge $1.25 for opening and closing commissions, micro futures are discounted to $0.85, while small futures only cost $0.25.”
