Core positions are often built up over time consisting of different trades at different prices. A trade intended as a scalp may turn into a core position and there may be related option trades. Tom and Tony Battista keep this all in their heads and look at overall P/L but others do things differently. Ben, the intern on our research staff joins the guys to show how he calculates his Cost Basis and explains how it helps him and can help you.
Ben showed an example of calculating the cost basis on 2 separate trades going long stock trades at different prices. It is the average cost per share. A graph of building a core position in the E-minis and scalping around the core position was displayed. A table listed additions to the core position and the calculations for them plus how to account for scalps around the core position.
A second table showing how selling options can help reduce our cost basis by benefiting from Theta (time decay) was displayed. The table included selling a Put against each short /ES Futures contract. The table showed the premium collected, the core contract cost and the new running cost basis. We believe that utilizing different methods to reduce cost basis is the key to trading success. It improves your Probability Of Profit (POP) beyond the initial 50/50.
