Rod T. sits down with Tom and Tony to discuss his journey and how tastylive helped to right his trading ship after it hit some rough seas. He makes his living now as a trader which affords him more time to spend with his family.
The interview began with a discussion of our Rising Star’s background. Rod was an Army Brat who lived in such places as Germany, California and Alaska growing up. He joined the Navy after high school. When He left the Navy, Rod went to College and then joined the Army National Guard and Army Reserves. His military career spanned 35 years.
Rod began trading on and off in the early 1980s. He became much more active in 2005. He found Investools which led him to thinkorswim where he learned about Tom. His go to strategy is to sell option premium using Strangles in the SPX. Overall he has experienced incredible success and in his main account has been up about 3% per month and 50% per year on average since 2007. He has been successful in his 401K but less so because of the restrictions there. His personal trading rules are keeping things simple, staying on focus and minimizing expenses.
He found tastylive after a trading debacle in August of 2015 in which he took a big hit as the SPX sold off more than 200 points in 3 trading days. Rod learned from this the importance of not getting too extended on his margin and to try to keep his Deltas and size smaller. Using studies from Market Measures and other shows on tastylive he was able to resume his path of trading success. Managing winners, avoiding holding trades into expiration because of the Gamma risk and rolling in-the-money (ITM) options to extend duration, were some of the tastylive tenets that have helped Rod in his trading.
