Tesla Earnings Preview: Robotaxi Hype vs. Margin Reality

By:Mike Butler
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) comes into earnings in the middle of a rebound. Shares have bounced more than 28% off their July low of $297.38, yet they still trade about 21% under the 52-week high of $498.83. The stock closed near $362 on October 15, and the market cap is hovering around $1.4 trillion with a P/E multiple well above 100.

Implied volatility is running hot into the report. The 6.2% expected move is meaningfully wider than what Tesla has typically delivered recently, and the company has a mixed record against estimates, topping consensus EPS in just half of its last eight quarters. That makes this a genuinely two-sided earnings setup. Looking to December 2026, Tesla's implied volatility is still substantial but the earnings report cuts into a large chunk of the implied move through the rest of the year. The weekly cycle boasts a +-$23 implied move, compared to the December options expiration that has just a +-$38 implied move.

Deliveries gave bulls an early talking point, but the quality of the beat is debatable. Much of the upside came from drawing down inventory rather than from a clear step up in demand, so the spotlight now shifts to profitability. Q2 revenue set a record at $28.2 billion, up 26%, but operating margin was only 1.4%. Automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits has compressed from 26.7% in 2022 to 16.3% in the most recent quarter. Investors also want to see whether energy storage margins bounce back after a steep drop in Q2.
The market increasingly prices Tesla as an autonomy and robotics company. Morgan Stanley’s Andrew Percoco says the Cybercab fleet in Austin has grown past 300 vehicles, an eightfold jump in a month, and cumulative unsupervised robotaxi miles have topped one million, up from about 380,000 at the Q2 report. Elon Musk has said Optimus and Cybercab will account for the bulk of Tesla’s long-term value. The call is where those ambitions need to be backed with fleet figures, timelines and unit economics.
The bull case starts with expectations that have already been trimmed. The EPS estimate has slipped about three cents in the past month, and Tesla’s Q2 revenue of $28.24 billion blew past the $25.71 billion consensus. Supporters also cite the autonomy ramp, a growing energy business, and a Street that leans positive, with 14 Buy ratings, 11 Holds and two Sells and an average price target near $412. Morningstar’s $450 fair value attributes roughly $135 a share to robotaxi alone. Hard fleet-size disclosures and a firm Optimus production schedule could keep the rebound going.
Bears contend the valuation leaves almost no margin for error. Tesla burned $1.1 billion in free cash flow last quarter while guiding to more than $25 billion in capex for the year. Regulatory pressure is building as well. NHTSA opened a review on October 9 covering roughly 1,000 robotaxi vehicles over school zone speed complaints, Tesla must respond by October 30 on its Cybercab self-certification, and European approval of supervised FSD is still up in the air. Goldman Sachs rates the stock Neutral with a $360 target, which sits slightly below recent prices. If margins stay thin and the autonomy update is light on specifics, there is little earnings support underneath the shares.
